Panzer-Division has used two-digit turret numbers. Half-tracks, such as the Sd Kfz , often received four-digit tactical numbers.

Battalion and regimental headquarters used a variety of markings. Regimental tanks, especially early in the war, replaced the first digit with a capital letter R, e.

Roman numerals were similarly used to identify the battalion headquarters tanks. In the case of Abteilungen, best translated as independent battalions, the battalion headquarter vehicles could simply have a zero as the first digit.

The disadvantage of such markings was that they also made it clear to the enemy which tanks were command tanks.

As a result, more obscure schemes were invented. One example, dated 24 April , lists the following examples for Panzer-Grenadier regiments:.

While the tactical number system varied somewhat from unit to unit, the style and color of the tactical numbers differed dramatically. If the pedal would have controlled the guns on the upper part, the recoil would have pulled the system upwards, again throwing off the gunner.

With the guns fired in diagonal pairs, the recoil compensated both horizontally and vertically, allowing the gunners to aim properly at their target.

An official order was issued to Flakvierling 38 crews to only fire two barrels at a time, but this recommendation was mostly ignored in the field.

Notice the large amounts of vegetation used as camouflage. Source: ww2dbase, German Federal Archive The aiming system consisted of either a Flakvisier 38 or a Flakvisier They differed in minor details.

These were electrical devices which used batteries to adjust the sights in order to help the gunners aim. The Flakvierling could rotate degrees, with elevation ranging from -8 to 85 degrees.

Both rotation and elevation were done manually. The first Sd. The guns were protected by a 3-part shield, with the outer sides being dismountable.

The shield weighed kg. These offered the gunners and loaders a degree of protection from rifle-caliber bullets.

For land use, the whole system sat on a static tripod which had a ring on which the system rotated.

When used on ships, the system sat on a pivot. No fewer than 10 men were needed to crew the Sd. A well worn early Sd.

The Flakvierling is lacking two of its barrels. The vehicle has received a coat of white-wash as camouflage.

Notice the wire mesh drop sides and the tools still attached to it. This was probably one of the reasons why the Sd.

The early war vehicles seem to have been painted in the regular Dunkelgrau color used for most German army vehicles at the time. Three license plates were fitted to the vehicle, two on the front bumper and one at the rear.

No other markings seem to be present on the vehicles. During winter, the Sd. A set of full-color pictures taken in Czechoslovakia in May of the surrender of the I.

Also, large amounts of vegetation were used to camouflage the vehicle and make it harder to see from the air.

Markings were quite rare. One vehicle was photographed with kill marks on the gun shield, indicating the number of plane and ground vehicle kills the crew claimed.

Another vehicle, from a leichte Flak-Btl. An up-armored Sd. However, these occurrences were the exception and not the rule. This was meant to remove any reflections from the metal shield which could give away the position of the gun system.

The two sunflowers are also an interesting addition. Source: German Self Propelled Guns, Armor at War series An Sd. Two or three Sd. After , a three-vehicle platoon was also added to the HQ unit of each Panzer Abteilung.

These vehicles were very well suited to accompany the German Panzer formations, as they could keep up with the tanks. Also, they could deploy very quickly, immediately providing cover for the troops in case of an unexpected air attack.

A towed AA gun would first have to be taken off its trailer and then be placed on its mounting, which would take precious time during an attack. Also, the Sd.

As a trade-off, the Flakvierling could be towed by far smaller vehicles, meaning that the creation of a SPAAG meant the loss of a powerful tractor which could be used to tow a heavier piece of ordnance.

This was especially important given the fact that, throughout WWII, the Wehrmacht was reliant on horses to tow their heavy ordnance, as there were never enough heavy tractors.

Their very high rate of fire made them a significant threat to enemy ground attack aircraft. Besides their potential to destroy the attackers, their presence could make enemy pilots hesitate or rush their attack runs, thus lowering their chances of success.

Besides obviously making it more visible, this also made it harder to dug-in compared to the towed Flakvierling, as the whole tractor had to be accommodated under cover.

Also, for the up-armored vehicles, the guns could not fire directly in front of the vehicle, creating a blind spot. However, their lack of armor meant that they had to avoid enemy ground forces, as the initial batches of vehicles were vulnerable to all small arms fire and to artillery shrapnel.

Even the later vehicles, although up-armored, were only protected against small arms fire coming from the front. Despite these flaws, the Sd.

In the ground fire support role, the Flakvierling could be a serious threat to enemy infantry and unarmored vehicles due to its high rate of fire and high caliber.

Also, when using AP rounds, the Flakvierling could penetrate light armored vehicles such as armored cars or the shields of AT guns.

When used in this role, the vehicle was driven in reverse, with the gun having a free field of fire towards the enemy.

This did offer the advantage of a quick getaway if needed. Also, the armor of the vehicle was definitely insufficient for the task, with the crew members, especially the loaders, being protected only by the gun shield.

The vehicle is being driven in reverse, with the gun facing towards the rear. Note that it is an early type vehicle, with no armor whatsoever except the gun shield.

Also, each used engines from its own line-up of civilian models, so engines were not standardized from the outset. The chassis of the heavy off-road passenger car was also used for the Leichter Panzerspähwagen Sd.

The first light off-road passenger cars were delivered by Stoewer in R Spezial , followed in by the first medium and in by the first heavy models.

The weaknesses of the program quickly became obvious - high costs, complex production and overstrained manufacturers unable to supply sufficient numbers of vehicles to fill all the slots of the receiving military units as planned.

This in turn led to many disadvantages with maintenance, supply and training. Enquiries with the different branches of the military revealed that the Einheits-Pkw were also flawed designs largely unfit for wartime service.

Not even the simplifications implemented on bodies and chassis in "Typ 40" , without the complex four-wheel steering, among others failed to remedy the multitude of shortcomings.

Their complex designs and excessive wear and tear aside, all types were mainly criticized for their high weight, which in turn meant a high fuel consumption and led to many broken frames and suspensions in the field.

Accordingly, production of the three types ceased in , , and , respectively. The light off-road passenger car was built by the BMW-Werk Eisenach under the designation BMW , as well as Hanomag Typ 20 B and Stoewer Typ R Spezial.

The vehicles were used as troop carriers Kfz. It used a Panzer IV chassis with the upper hull and turret replaced by a new casemate -style armoured superstructure housing a new gun, the centimetre 5.

It fired the same shells as the 15 cm sIG 33 heavy infantry gun. Thirty-eight rounds, with separate propellant cartridges, could be carried.

It used the Sfl. An MG 34 machine gun was carried that could be fastened to the open gunner's hatch, much like the arrangement on the Sturmgeschütz III Ausf.

Early vehicles carried an MP 40 sub-machine gun inside, which could be fired through firing ports in the side of the superstructure.

The driver's station projected forward from the casemate's sloped frontal armour plate and used the Tiger I 's Fahrersehklappe 80 driver's sight.

The fighting compartment was, albeit poorly, ventilated by natural convection, exiting out the rear of the superstructure through two armoured covers.

Sideskirts were fitted on all vehicles. Early vehicles were too heavy for the chassis, which led to frequent breakdowns of the suspension and transmission.

Efforts were made to ameliorate this from the second series onwards, with some success. In October , it was decided that the StuH 43 gun needed to be redesigned to reduce its weight.

Some of the weight was saved by reducing the armour on the gun mount itself. This gun was used from the third production series onwards.

Zimmerit coating was applied to all vehicles until September Production of the first series of 60 vehicles began in April Fifty-two of these were built using new Panzer IV Ausf.

G chassis and the remaining 8 from rebuilt Ausf. E and F chassis. Survivors, about half, were rebuilt beginning in December ; they were mostly rebuilt to 2nd series standards.

Production restarted in December with another 60 vehicles, using only new Ausf. H chassis, and continued until March The Sturmpanzer's baptism in combat at the Battle of Kursk proved that the driver's compartment was too lightly armoured and it was reinforced.

The gunner's hatch was removed and a ventilator fan was fitted, much to the relief of the crew. Internally sprung, steel-rimmed road wheels replaced the front two rubber-rimmed road wheels in an effort to reduce the stress on the forward suspension that was only partially successful.

Production of the third series ran from March to June with few changes from the second series.
